Money

There is a lot of guides pointing out that Japan is a cash based society. Although cards are widely accepted nowadays, ther is a truth behind that advice. In case of disaster, landlines and electricity will be interupted. For that case Japanese cling to their cash as electronic payments might be interupted.

Otherwise Credit and Debit Cards are widely accepted with the occasional exception. ATMS at regular japanese banks tend to not accept foreign cards, whilst the convenience store ATMS, especially at 7eleven stores tend to accept all mayor cards for cash withdrawal.

If you are travelling on toll roads always take some cash with you. Some toll booths don’t accept credit cards and will need cash payment.

Credit Card – before coming to Japan, make sure your credit cards are cleared to be used in Japan by your bank. Contact your bank for details.

Cash exchange – exchange cash in Japan – the rate is usually better there.
